In 2010, a group of researchers publicly announced a project to design a new object-oriented programming language, Grace, whose intended audience was novice programmers. Several papers since then have described the design of the language, which has several innovative features. However, there have been no published reports on how the language works for its intended target audience. In this paper, the authors report initial impressions of their first attempts at teaching with Grace.
